A wonderful woman hired me to photograph some inanimate characters for a project she is working on. Instead of bringing the characters to my studio, we decided that it would be fun to shoot them outside in their natural habitat. I started off at Anne's home, then took the characters to MacDonald Park and worked my way down to the beach.
I have to tell you, I had so much fun with this photo shoot! It was just me and the stuffies in the great outdoors and I literally LAUGHED OUT LOUD when I realized that I was talking to them! It's true! I told Eagle something to the effect of, "Oooo, this gives you some nice warm light on your face," as I held a reflector up to him. It suddenly occurred to me that I'd been talking aloud to all of the animals and I was on the fourth character! At least thirty minutes of 'stuffy-talk' had transpired! For some reason, it really tickled me. I had such a good laugh that tears rolled down my face.
So there I was, alone in the forest with the sun streaming down through the trees on a glorious Spring day; I was on my knees with my camera in hand, having a good guffaw with eleven stuffed animals. You can't really plan such moments, but it was a beauty.
I'd like to thank you, Anne Gardner, for using me for this project. You are a creative genius and I know that your efforts will help many children across the country!

At Home with Baby Ben| Comox Valley Photographer
I'm sitting in my studio at the moment; the sun is shining through the windows and Anais Mitchell is providing some mellow background music. It's a nice space. I love the clean, white walls and the Asparagus green accents, and I like being surrounded by my gear. I like being here.
Do you remember a movie about 'walls'?...if these walls could talk? As I recall, it was a depressing film, but I'm thinking about the walls of my studio in a much more positive light. If my studio walls could talk, they would speak of all of the people who have shared their LOVE in this room. Love for their partners, love for their families, their new babies...or themselves. Some of my favourite sessions have been with women on their own; classy boudoir shoots and maternity sessions. I have not had a single client bring any negativity into this space. It has been wonderful.
I'm glad I have the option of shooting in my studio. I enjoy manipulating light, controlling the environment, and I love the dramatic effects I can create with my studio lights, but studio sessions are not for everyone. Particularly in the arena of baby photography, the trend is to shoot newborn sessions at home.
I had scheduled a studio session for my sweet little nephew Ben, my brother Kevin and his fiancee Kristi, but at the last minute I suggested a 'home-shoot.' My brother isn't really a 'studio' kind of guy, so I guessed that I would get more authentic photos of him with his family if they were all relaxing in their own home.
I think I made the right call. These are very honest, pure, un-staged photos that tell the love story of this new little family.
I can usually predict that I'm going to get shots of parents looking at their new babies with love pouring out through their eyes, but I was just blown away by the expressions of love I witnessed from Ben as he looked at his mom and dad. He was so expressive, and he was only eight weeks old at the time of our session! You can see how smitten he is with his parents.
I hope you enjoy looking through these; and if you know anyone who is expecting a baby or has a new addition to their family, please lead them in my direction! (That would really make my day!)

The Givers. | Comox Valley Photographer
I was honoured when Lynn Brandon, president of the Strathcona Sunrise Rotary Club, contacted me about photographing their 25th Anniversary Celebration. The event took place on March 1st at the Best Western Waverley Hotel, and it was a pleasure to shoot. It was inspiring to meet the fine people who contribute so generously to the betterment of both our local and global communities.
The Best Western created a stellar environment for the party, and the Jenn Forsland band provided beautiful music throughout the evening.
There were some lovely moments; especially when individuals were recognized by their fellow members. It's good to be reminded of the importance of service to others.

Happy Two-Month Birthday Ben! | Comox Valley Newborn Photographer
My nephew Benjamin is two months old today, so I thought I would post a couple of photos of the wee lad in his honour.
I love this sweet boy!
Thanks to the lovely Jacquie at Village Yarn Shoppe in the Comox Mall for loaning us the yarn for this photo shoot!

Bang Theory | Comox Valley Photographer
DAY 1:
I was on the phone with my sister-in-law yesterday when my three-year-old daughter Sophie came up to me and said, "Don't I look beautiful, Mommy?"
"Of course you do, Sweetheart!" I said quickly, not noticing her most recent handiwork.
"I cut my bangs without cutting my forehead!" she exclaimed proudly. I followed her into the living-room where her big sister was making a craft. There on the table, lay a few rather long locks of Sophie's hair, and a pair of kid's scissors.
"Now her bangs won't get in her eyes," her big sister said helpfully. I could hear my sister-in-law giggling on the phone, so I told her that it was all her fault, then hung up to investigate the damage.
The bangs were a mess, but Sophie was jubilant. In her eyes, she had accomplished something monumental. She's been really interested in making crafts lately, and her scissor skills have improved tremendously in the past few weeks. Tackling a new medium, like hair, without causing injury to herself was indeed praiseworthy.
I'm rather proud of my reaction. Instead of unleashing a horrified, "What have you done to your hair???"... I focused on the safety aspect of the trim. I told Sophie that I was impressed with her new haircut, but that it had been very dangerous to have the scissors so close to her eyes and she was NEVER to do it again.
It was time to get ready for dance class, so I decided to drop the issue, but not before asking five-year-old Stella the following question, "Stella, do you remember me ever saying to you girls that you were never, ever to use the scissors for cutting your hair?"
"Well Mama," she began thoughtfully, "I remember you saying that we should never cut our dolls hair, but that's it."
Nice.
DAY 2:
This morning, it was time to document the new bangs. I pulled out my camera while Sophie and Stella were having breakfast at their little table. I asked Sophie what my face looked like when I first saw her new haircut.
First she did this:
Then she did this:
Oops. And I thought I'd masked my true feelings.
Then I asked Sophie how she felt about her new bangs and she said, 'Ta da!'
This shot, I admit, was staged.
After our little photo shoot, I realized that Sophie's bangs were really growing on me. (No pun intended.) Not just because they make me smile, it has more to do with 'chutzpah.' I mean, I wish I had the confidence to pick up the scissors, butcher my hair, then throw my arms in the air and say, 'Ta da! Don't I look beautiful?'
Nevertheless, I told the girls that I would call our favourite hair salon, Indigo Lounge, tomorrow to make an appointment for Sophie. Sophie was a bit apprehensive, so I told her that the stylist, Heather, was as lovely and sweet as Snow White, (which she is,) and Elton's dog Cassius, who was a very gentle beast, might be there. By the time I kissed Sophie goodnight, she was excited about seeing Princess Heather at Indigo. "I wonder if she'll have a crown," she sighed.
When I tucked Stella into bed, I decided to ask her a few questions about the incident, "Stella, did you actually see Sophie cut her bangs?"
"Uh..."
"Be completely honest, please."
"Yes, and I tried to say, 'Sophie, you shouldn't cut your own bangs,' but she said, 'but I'm going to make them look beautifuler,' so ..."
"Did you know that it was dangerous for her to have the scissors up close to her eyes?" I asked.
"Ya, but I'd never seen her do anything like that before and I didn't know what to do."
"Stella," I said, "I completely understand and I would have felt the same way if I were you."
She gave me a great big hug at that point. "Stel, if I can get an appointment for you, would you like to get your haircut too?"
"Okay. Would I get to meet Cassius?"
"Maybe. I'm not sure if Elton and Heather always take their dog to the salon, but we'll see."
"Does Cassius have bangs?"
"Oh, you're funny."
"Did he cut his own tail?"

Baby Bliss | Comox Valley Photographer
Something transformative happens to my studio when I have a newborn shoot. Yes, there is definitely an increase of bodily fluids...a little poop here and a bit of spit-up there...but it's more than that. My studio is so small and intimate that it seems as though the Love Energy from these brand new families consumes every available molecule. The love is truly palpable, and my cheeks end up hurting by the end of the session because I cannot stop smiling. (I'm even smiling just thinking about this shoot!)
These young parents were no exception. They were in the land of baby bliss and it was easy to see why. Their daughter was a sweetheart! She was a few weeks old at the time of our session, which meant that we didn't get any of the really sleepy, infant shots, but we captured some amazing interactions between the three new family members.
They are falling in love!
Finally, my apologies to this gorgeous, new family for not having their photos on the blog before Christmas. It was a busy season, and I am only now feeling on top of things.
You are beautiful. Thank you.
